Celebrate Women in Mathematics Day 2021

We hope you can join us to help celebrate International Women in Mathematics (and Statistics) Day. Here is a rundown of what we have planned for you. At the bottom of the page is information on how you can share your own Women in Maths Day message!

"Inclusion-Exclusion in the mathematical sciences: who is kept out, and how we can use maths to bring them in"

Dr Cheng has been featured in the New York Times, presented TED Talks, written several books, and even appeared on "The Late Show with Steven Colbert".

Dr Eugenia Cheng’s most recent book, X + Y, a Mathematician’s Manifesto for Rethinking Gender, tackles the issue of gender inequality and argues that her mathematical specialty, category theory, reveals why. In this lecture, Dr Cheng explores how we can make mathematics more inclusive.

The Road Ahead for Women in STEM - a virtual panel discussion - 12 pm to 1 pm AEST

On Women in Maths Day, join us for an engaging panel discussion that brings together some top leaders in education in Australia. The aim of the discussion is to be forward-looking and to explore how we can get more women in higher-level positions in universities, as well as more women in STEM and, specifically, the mathematical sciences.

Our Panellists:

- Prof Ana Deletic, Executive Dean, QUT Faculty of Engineering

- Prof Moira O'Bryan, Dean of Science, The University of Melbourne

- Prof Asha Rao, Associate Dean, RMIT Mathematical Sciences

The Chair of the ACEMS Equity and Diversity Committee, Dr Rachael Quill, will moderate the discussion.

** In addition, our nodes at The University of Melbourne and QUT are hosting events around this panel discussion. Watch your emails from local organisers for more information.

Remember Maryam Mirzakhani

QUT Gardens Point, P-Block, The Cube - All Day

Remember Maryam Mirzakhani is an exhibition with 18 original posters celebrating the life of Maryam Mirzakhani, the only woman to ever win the Fields Medal, the top award in the Mathematics. Maryam died in 2017. International Women in Mathematics Day is celebrated annually now on her birthday, 12 May.

The exhibition at The Cube will be a digital display of the 18 posters. The exhibition first opened at (WM)², the World Meeting for Women in Mathematics, and remained open during ICM 2018. (Curator: Thais Jordao. Designer: Rafael Meireles Barroso.)

No registration is required.

Women in Maths Message Campaign

ACEMS invites you to take part in a video and poster campaign to celebrate International Women in Mathematics Day 2021.

ACEMS is putting together videos and posters for sharing leading up to the day and on the day itself. ACEMS will also share them on its website, on all of its social media and on its YouTube page. The campaign is open anyone in the mathematical sciences (not just women). So allies of women in maths, feel free to share a message of support!
