Mrs Vanessa Haller-Bull
Vanessa Haller is especially interested in the different types of uncertainty when modelling ecological systems. Her background is in Marine Biology so much of her research uses marine systems as case studies. Ecological systems are especially high in uncertainty due to their complexity and the difficulty in the collection of large datasets. The main types of uncertainty that Vanessa is currently concerned with is the parametric uncertainty, mostly caused by the inaccuracy or lack of data, and the structural uncertainty that origins from the mismatch between the ecological system and the simplified models. To reduce and estimate these uncertainties, Vanessa uses a variety of different models (from simple one species models to complex foodweb models) and approaches (from analytical analysis to a variety of statistical analysis). She is constantly on the lookout for new methods to tackle uncertainties.
