Conservation Student Wins National Science Quiz Online Competition

Congratulations to Meghan Shaw, the winner of this year’s online version of the National Science Quiz.

More than 1,200 people around Australia competed in the competition, and Meghan was the only person to get all 14 questions right. Meghan couldn’t believe it when the online leader board showed her in first place after the last question.

“I was excited, and a bit confused. I thought how ‘did this happen’?!” says Meghan.

The National Science Quiz was hosted once again this year by the ABC’s Charlie Pickering and shown on the ACEMS YouTube channel. As two teams of scientists and science communicators competed against each other, people around the country also competed by answering the same questions online.

“I really enjoyed listening to the panellists describe their reasoning for their answer choices. I loved seeing the thinking processes behind solving problems and their team spirit,” says Meghan.

Meghan is in her first year of a PhD at Deakin University with the Centre for Integrative Ecology. Her PhD is focusing on conservation marketing.

“I’m exploring how Australian wildlife and conservation organisations can best use images to increase the public’s appreciation for native wildlife,” says Meghan.

Meghan found out about the Quiz from a friend who was having a watch party. As winner of the online competition, Meghan takes home the $1,000 first prize.

“I definitely had a few lucky guesses!”

Congratulations, Meghan – and thanks for joining us for the National Science Quiz!
