Introduction to the Tidyverse

When:

13 March 2017, 10 am to 4 pm

Where:

Microsoft Innovation Centre, Level 28, 400 George Street, Brisbane, QLD 4000

Presenter: Miles McBain, ACEMS at QUT

This is the first of a 2 part R workshop series that teaches data wrangling and visualisation from the perspective of tidy data and and the Tidyverse.

You will learn how the tools of the Tidyverse fit together under a common data centric API and philosophy that leads to greater effectiveness and efficiency. Tidy tools deal with many of the common challenges in the modern data workflow including wrangling, visualisation, and modelling. Strong data skills in these areas are essential to any data science project, and the Tidyverse approach will provide a strong foundation for continued learning.

The workshop will begin with the elementary concepts of the Tidyverse including the coding style and the definition of tidy data. From there, data wrangling and shaping skills are built to form a solid base for tidy approaches to visualisation (ggplot2) and modelling. The workshop is highly interactive and aims to teach participants ‘to fish’ by example using key online resources like cheat sheets etc. To learn more about Tidyverse approach to data science, please see https://blog.rstudio.org/2016/09/15/tidyverse-1-0-0/

A small number of sponsored places will be available to promote equality and diversity among the R community. We encourage those who identify as coming from minority groups or experiencing hardship to apply for these. This applies also if you are a student, returning to the workforce, or are experiencing financial hardship. Please contact Jessie.roberts@qut.edu.au and we will be glad to consider sponsoring your place.

Target Audience: New R users, or current R users interested in learning about the tidyverse approach to R and data science.
