ACEMS 2018 Retreat

This year the RACV Resort in the beautiful coastal town of Torquay in Victoria will be our host. Torquay is situated approximately 105 kilometres from Melbourne (around 2 hours travel time).

The ACEMS Annual Retreat is an opportunity for the ACEMS community to come together, celebrate and share the Centre's achievements and research from the previous year, as well as discuss the vision and goals for the next year.

The retreats will take place during the week of 29th October to 2nd November as follows:

  • Early Career Researchers (ECR) & Student Retreats: 12 pm (AEDT) Mon 29th October to 12 pm Weds 31st October
  • Main Retreat: 1 pm (AEDT) Weds 31st October to 1 pm Fri 2nd November

IMPORTANT INFORMATION – Please read:

TRANSPORT TO/FROM TORQUAY:

A shuttle bus will be provided to/from Torquay (for those that requested a seat when registering).

Travel time is between 1.5 to 2 hours from the airport/Melbourne CBD.

Buses depart The University of Melbourne on Monday 29 October and Wednesday 31 October at 10:30 am (AEDT) SHARP. Please make sure you arrive by 10 am to not delay the bus.

MEETING SPOT FOR BUSES:

North side of Grattan St near Swanston St end (see map) (note: Grattan St is closed to traffic)

Parking at the RACV Resort is free for guests.

arranged to transport participants to/from the venue but you MUST indicate when you register that you require a seat on the shuttle/s (as the bus/buses will be booked according to numbers registered).

FROM Torquay – Shuttle buses will depart RACV Torquay at 2pm (AEDT) on Friday 2nd November. There will be a bus going direct to Melbourne Airport and another heading back to the University of Melbourne.

Alternate Transport Options: For those not taking the shuttle (or travelling outside the designated times), options include flying in to Avalon Airport (https://www.avalonairport.com.au), hire car or public transport. Public transport could be via a train from Southern Cross Station (Skybus stop) to Waurn Ponds (Geelong Line) and then a 20 min taxi ride to RACV Torquay (22kms). WiFi is available for all guests at the RACV and no login is required.

'Over flow' accommodation is the Torquay Hotel. People allocated rooms there will be contact individually.

MEALS

The following meals are included as part of the retreat (please be specific about dietary requirements in your registration):

ECR & Student Retreats:

Monday:  Lunch, Afternoon Tea, Dinner at Torquay Hotel (2 course set menu, drinks not included) 
Tuesday: Breakfast, Morning Tea, Lunch, Afternoon Tea

Main Retreat:

Wednesday: Breakfast (at hotel for those who stayed Tuesday night), Morning Tea (ECR & Students), Lunch, Afternoon Tea & Welcome Dinner (also on-site)
Thursday: Breakfast, Morning Tea, Lunch, Afternoon Tea
Friday: Breakfast, Morning Tea, Lunch (retreat program will officially conclude just before lunchtime).

ACEMS Podcast Launch Party - The Random Sample

Join us Wednesday evening (31 October) for the launch of The Random Sample, ACEMS' newly created podcast series. 

The Random Sample will feature ACEMS members spotlighting different topics in mathematics and statistics. 

Help The Random Sample get off to a big start, by attending the launch party/pre-dinner drinks will be held at 6 pm in the Great Ocean Road Foyer at the RACV Resort.

MathsCraft Session at ACEMS Retreat

At this year's annual retreat we are lucky enough to have Anita Ponsaing (ACEMS Outreach Officer) and Anthony Harradine (MathsCraft creator) present a Mathscraft session for members of ACEMS to experience.

Registration for the MathsCraft Session is required as there are limited spaces. Get in quickly before they all fill up.
