Data Visualisation / Interaction Designer

The position of Data Visualisation / Interaction Designer is situated within the ARC Centre of Excellence for Mathematical and Statistical Frontiers (ACEMS).

We are looking for a Visualisation / Interaction Designer that is passionate about data visualisation.  The successful candidate will be responsible for conceiving and designing data driven visualisations for the National Cancer Atlas which will communicate insights from leading edge spatial statistical analyses for cancer incidence and survival in Australia. 

The role will involve designing the overall functionality of the digital product and iterate upon it to ensure a great user experience and working closely with a contracted design organisations that will be responsible for building the fully interactive product.

The successful candidate will be required to design for a range of audiences and work closely with the research team behind the Atlas of Cancer in Australia project.

Both Visualisation and Interaction Designers with a passion for data or Data Analysts with a passion for visualisation are encouraged to apply.

This position reports to the ACEMS Chief Operating Officer within the QUT Node for supervision, workload management and for Performance Planning and Review (PPR).

Key responsibilities include:

  • Develop novel solutions for visualizing/communicating statistical insights, including statistical uncertainty, to a range of audiences.
  • Prototype and rapidly iterate through concepts in collaboration with stakeholders.
  • Using mobile-first approach, design and deliver a web-based visualization platform that facilitates novel insights from data.
  • Perform user research to inform the user-centred design process.
  • Identify design problems and devise elegant solutions.
  • Collaborate closely with other team members and stakeholders.
  • Implementing and administering University policy within the Faculty with respect to equitable access to education and workplace health and safety.

 

Type of appointment

This appointment will be offered on a fixed-term, full-time basis for 12 months.

This position has been identified as a role that could be undertaken by a person with undergraduate qualifications with several years’ work experience or a person with post-graduate qualifications with limited work experience.

The University reserves the right to appoint at either LEVA or LEVB.

Selection Criteria

  • Education, training and/or qualifications equivalent to a degree in visualisation design or statistics or data analysis (or a related field) is essential in conjunction with exceptional relevant experience; OR a post-graduate qualification with limited relevant experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in a Data Visualisation or Interactive Designer role designing digital projects for a range of audiences.
  • Demonstrated computer literacy skills including proficiency in D3.js, HTML5, CSS3 and JavaScript are highly desirable.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate with a diverse range of stakeholders from industry and government.
  • Demonstrated ability to work within a project team environment as well as autonomously.

Remuneration and Benefits

The classification for this position is Academic Level A or Level B depending on the successful applicant’s qualifications:

Academic Level A (Research Associate) which has an annual remuneration range of $76,168 to $103,354pa. Which is inclusive of an annual salary range of $64,364 to $87,337pa, 17% superannuation and 17.5% recreation leave loading;

Academic Level B (Research Associate) which has an annual remuneration range of $108,796 to $129,209pa. Which is inclusive of an annual salary range of $91,934 to $109,183pa, 17% superannuation and 17.5% recreation leave loading.
