Staff and student recognition: Prizes, awards and other prestige measures

Throughout 2018 Centre researchers and students were recognised for their outstanding excellence in research, outreach and scientific contributions. A total of 39 prizes, awards and other prestige measures, were awarded to ACEMS members, including 12 from ACEMS. These were awarded to or shared by 35 Centre researchers and students, exceeding ACEMS' 2018 target of 16.

  • Aswi Aswi - Best Student Presentation at the Australasian Applied Statistics Conference 2018, Rotorua, New Zealand.
  • Aswi Aswi won one of four student places at the UseR2018! Competition.
  • Peter Ballard and Nicholas Rebuli were both awarded the Dean's Commendation for Doctoral Thesis Excellence by the Dean of Graduate Studies at The University of Adelaide.
  • Peter Bartlett and Matthew Roughan were made Fellows of the Association for Computing Machinery.
  • Nigel Bean, Ben Rohrlach and Simon Tuke were awarded the South Australian Science Excellence Award: Excellence in Research Collaboration by the Government of South Australia, Department of Industry and Skills.
  • Nick Beaton, Jan de Gier and Anthony Guttman were awarded the Gavin Brown Best Paper Prize by the Australian Mathematical Society.
  • Hernan Benitez was awarded a Fullbright Visiting Scholarship by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, United States Department of State.
  • Susanna Cramb was awarded Best of the Best non-student poster pitch at the International Society for Clinical Biostatistics and Australian Statistical Conference.
  • Susanna Cramb was made a Superstar of STEM by Science and Technology Australia.
  • Claudia Deasy, David Frazier, Jesper Ipsen, Lewis Mitchell, Matias Quiroz and Tea Uggen were individually awarded The ACEMS Outstanding Recognition Award at the 2018 ACEMS Annual Retreat.
  • Aurore Delaigle was elected Fellow of the American Statistical Association.
  • Caitlin Gray won the Three Minute Thesis Competition held at the Faculty of Engineering, Computer and Mathematical Sciences, The University of Adelaide.
  • Liam Hodgkinson was awarded the Bernhard Neumann Prize by the Australian Mathematical Society.
  • The NUMBatS (an ACEMS research team based at Monash) and Erin Peterson were awarded the Impact & Engagement Award at the 2018 ACEMS Annual Retreat.
  • Sevvandi Kandanaarachchi was awarded the WIMSIG Anne Penfold Street Award by the Australian Mathematical Society.
  • Kerrie Mengersen was made a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science.
  • Lewis Mitchel, Anthony Mays and Giang Nguyen were each awarded the Recognition for Outstanding Participation in Outreach award at the 2018 ACEMS Annual Retreat.
  • Tui Nolan was awarded the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Scientist Travelling Research Award by the Australian Academy of Science.
  • Tui Nolan was awarded The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander STEM Professional Early Career Award by the CSIRO.
  • Louise Ryan was awarded the Pitman Medal by the Statistical Society of Australia.
  • Leah South received an honourable mention under the category of best posters in theory and methods for her poster "Unbiased and Consistent Nested Sampling via Sequential Monte Carlo" at the Bayesian Young Statisticians Meeting.
  • Matt Sutton, Benoit Liquet, Kerrie Mengersen and Anthony Pettitt shared the Lindley prize at the International Society for Bayesian Analysis World meeting.
  • Dilini Talagala and Earo Wang were awarded the Business Analytics Prize by ACEMS.
  • Dilini Talagala and Nick Tierney were runners up for the EJC Pitman Prize from the Statistical Society of Australia.
  • Tea Uggen was selected for the International Biometric Society 2018 Young Statisticians' Showcase.
  • Tea Uggen was awarded First Prize in the 19th Annual J.B. Douglas Postgraduate Awards from the Statistical Society of Australia.
  • Earo Wang and Stephanie Kobakian were winners of the useR! Datathon challenge.
  • Earo Wang was awarded the ASA Statistical Graphics Student Paper Award by the American Statistical Association.
